SAVE THE DATE: Let’s celebrate our birthday on Feb. 23

The Daily Tar Heel will wrap up a year celebrating its 125th birthday by turning 126 on Feb. 23, 2019. And we are inviting you to celebrate with us. On the weekend of Feb. 23, alumni from all generations will gather in Chapel Hill to celebrate our beloved student newspaper’s past and help plan for a sustainable future.

On Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019 there will be panel discussions on the future of news and conversations tackling issues facing the journalism field today. Featured speakers will include Robyn Tomlin, executive editor of the Raleigh News & Observer, and Melanie Sill, renowned news consultant. Erica Perel, general manager of the DTH, will also give an updated look at the DTH’s finances and alumni will have a chance to help brainstorm new revenue opportunities.

On Saturday evening, we will honor Sharif Durhams, a senior editor for CNN Digital, as the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. Saturday night, there will be plenty of opportunities to socialize with old and new friends, as well as hear from current student journalists.
We will also recognize people from classes celebrating milestone reunion years (such as the classes of 2014, 2009, 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989, 1979, 1969.)

And of course, no springtime weekend in Chapel Hill would be complete without attending a UNC basketball game. The Tar Heels will play the Florida State Seminoles at 3:45 pm on Saturday in the Dean Dome. Join fellow alumni for a game-watching party, or buy tickets to the game here.
